When two supplements provide the same named nutrient, it is easy to assume that the only meaningful difference is the dose. In practice, the formulation can also differ. One product may use a familiar tablet, powder or capsule, while another combines the nutrient with phospholipids and describes the result as liposomal.

What is a standard formulation?

Does liposomal automatically mean more bioavailable?

No universal conclusion can be drawn from the category name alone. Bioavailability is assessed using defined measurements under a particular study design. A finding for one nutrient, dose and finished formula should not be transferred automatically to another nutrient or product.

When research is presented, check what was actually compared. Was the dose matched? Was the study conducted in people? Did it measure blood concentration, another laboratory marker or a meaningful outcome? How many participants completed the study, and was the tested product the same as the one being sold?

A measured difference in a pharmacokinetic marker can be useful evidence, but it should not be rewritten as a promise of a greater health benefit unless that specific conclusion has been demonstrated and can lawfully be communicated.

  5. Which format fits your preferences for serving size, storage, taste, swallowing and price?

Price should be compared fairly

A higher pack price does not necessarily mean a higher price per useful serving, and a lower headline price does not necessarily mean better value. Compare the cost per recommended serving, the active nutrient amount in that serving and the number of servings in the pack.

For liposomal products, do not divide the price by the total complex weight and treat that figure as the nutrient dose. The complex may include both the active nutrient and phospholipids.
